Southern California - Los Angeles
Ben
Hi we're Ben and Chloe. We live in a two bedroom house in Glassell Park, Los Angeles, that feels like homestead in the middle of the city. We have a spunky cat named Sofa, a very sweet dog named Tunia, and three chickens (Nugget, Melon and The Baroness). Even though we have a lot of animals, they get along pretty well with one another. The chickens are very self sufficient and basically just need food and water, but if you feel like letting them out of their coop, they love to roam around the yard. Sofa, the cat, has a lot of personality, and loves to explore outside during the day and cuddle whenever the opportunity arises. Tunia is a big (70ish LBS) sweet puppy. She's well trained, and is almost two years old so still has puppy energy. We also grow vegetables and lots of native plants that pretty much take care of themselves.
Our house is a gated two bedroom one bath on a very quiet hillside street. The inside of the house is about 800 sq ft. It gets good light during the day. It has wall air conditioning when it's hot, but you generally don't need it as we tend to get a pretty good breeze. We have a record player and a projector in the living room that can be hooked up to a laptop for watching movies. We love to cook, and have a solid selection of kitchenware.
The yard is definitely a major highlight of the house. It's fairly large, at least compared to other houses in the area, and has a front and back area. The front has a vegetable garden (hooked up to a drip irrigation system that's on a timer, so you won't have to worry about it). The back has a lot of native and drought tolerant plants, a couple of sitting/dining areas, a hammock, a charcoal grill, and a chicken coop. There are hanging lights set up so you can sit out there when it's dark.
Our house and yard are down a short hill. At the top of the hill, there's a garage which our landlord converted to a living space and lives in. He's a sweet older man and is very respectful of privacy, you will rarely see him.
Even though the house is in the middle of Los Angeles, it has a very rustic vibe. There is public transportation nearby and a fair amount of things to do within 10-15 minutes walking distance of the house as well. Some highlights include:
Bub and Grandma's, a deli style bakery/restaurant that seems to be the hot new spot on the east side
The Grant, a stylish cocktail lounge
Lemon Poppy, a laidback sandwhich shop/cafe
Verdugo Bar, a beer garden type of place with lots of outdoor seating
Glassell Park, which has a great public pool (or take the dog for some fetch)
Angela's TJ Tacos, a stand that comes out in the evening and actually has arguably the best tacos in Los Angeles.
P.S. Sorry for the awful cropping on our photos, seems like an issue with this website! Happy to share more + uncropped photos upon request!
