We need a house sitter

Highlands - Estill

Sophie

Hello! We have a 40 acre farmstead right on the KY river and in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Spring water, a waterfall on the property, and nice woods to hike in. Lots of interesting history here--there's steep cliffs and an old Native American cave (feels like the red river gorge), Al Capone owned it back during prohibition, and the Cornbread Mafia were here in the 70s and 80s.

We plan on going on a 2 month honeymoon this winter, sometime between Dec-Feb. There are amazing (mostly elderly) neighbors with great stories. The home is a unique set up with 2x 1840s log cabins connected and expanded.

CAR: We would leave behind a vehicle, a 2003 Tacoma with 292k miles that's MANUAL--we are 30 mins from downtown Irvine which has a Sav-a-lot grocery store but not much else. Richmond is 50 mins away which has everything. And Lexington is 1:15 away. The truck starts to make weird noises beyond a round trip to Lexington, so we usually don't take it further.

4x4: We are also leaving behind a 2 person side by side with 4wd for you to use

As far as the house sit stuff:

1) CHICKENS: we have ~35 chickens/guineas in a barn that are fed and watered daily, monitored for any sickness, and usually they free range... but we'll see if that makes sense in the winter. We have a whole pharmacy of chicken meds on hand.

2) GOAT: in that same barn is a female nigerian dwarf goat that is not being milked. She just needs food and water daily. She might have a temporary fence to romp around in by then, otherwise she stays leashed in front of the barn so she can be near the chickens for company.

3) CATS: there are 2 outdoor barn cats that just need food every couple days. They share water with the goat/chickens and they don't have a litter box, they just go outside.

4) PLANTS: we have a handful of houseplants that are watered weekly, and a room we plan on moving some outdoor plants into so they can stay warm and watered in the winter

***

YOUR PETS: Indoor cats and dogs are fine, but outdoor dogs and cats would be a dealbreaker due to our free ranging chickens and existing outdoor cats

CONNECTIVITY: AT&T is the only carrier that works out here. We also have a starlink which works great.

WINTER CONSIDERATIONS: it could get super cold in KY in winter and snowy... but it should just stay chilly but not frozen most of the time. A super heavy snowfall could make it hard to leave for potentially a couple weeks. Our water comes down from a spring in a pipe that's on top of the ground, so every once in awhile a salamander or something crawls in and makes it slow down, or the pipe comes apart in a certain place if a tree falls, or the water could freeze if it gets that cold. Our neighbor is very familiar with the property and caretook it for years before we showed up, and would be able to help if anything came up. We would also always be reachable on our phones since we're staying in the USA

HEAT: we have a wood fireplace we need to make sure works, but we've been stacking away firewood so there should be plenty. We also have a propane heater in the center of the living room.

Would love to chat if you have any interest/questions. Thank you for considering!
